Former Coroner Turned State Lawmaker Calls for More Regulations Following Suburban Chicago Cemetery Scandal
The scandal over an Illinois cemetery at which employees allegedly dug up graves and re-sold the plots is a perfect reason why the state needs stricter regulations, according to a lawmaker who is also a funeral director.

The case of Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip has made news worldwide. Among the latest allegations: that management allowed the casket of Emmett Till to rot. Till was a black Chicago teenager lynched in 1950s Mississippi for whistling at a white woman.

State Representative Dan Brady (R-Bloomington), a former McLean County Coroner, has spent much of this year calling for tighter regulation, particularly of pre-need sales. "We have professional regulation that licenses some part of the industry and not others adequately," says Brady. "You have individuals who are allowed into an area to get their commissions, to sell things, and tell people anything to get them to sign on the dotted line."
