Monmouth College Recipient of Wells Foundation Grant
Monmouth College has received a $45,000 grant from the Franklin H. and Ruth L. Wells Foundation, headquartered in Camp Hill, Pa.

The grant, which will be funded over three years at $15,000 annually, will enable several programs in support of integrated learning and interdisciplinary inquiry in the sciences and business.

A 1923 alumna of Monmouth College, Ruth Lugg Wells was called "a cherished friend" of her alma mater by MC president Mauri Ditzler.

"She gave generously to Monmouth for many years through annual gifts and a contribution to the renovation of the recital hall in the Monmouth College Auditorium," said Ditzler. "Upon her death, the foundation established in her and her husband's name has continued to provide generous support, for which I and the college community are deeply grateful."

The Wells Foundation provided the naming gift for the college's Wells Theater, completed in 1990. Recently, charitable gifts from the foundation have gone directly into improvements to support innovative, technologically sophisticated teaching and learning at Monmouth.

The latest grant from the Wells Foundation will help Monmouth College move forward with a strategic academic focus upon issues and opportunities facing the Midwest and the intersection between the sciences and business. Money from the grant will be used to fund team research projects and curriculum development as well as enhance senior capstone experiences.

"We are particularly eager to support experiential, hands-on research for our students and to introduce them to cutting edge interdisciplinary inquiry," said Ditzler. "We are excited about the potential outcomes of courses and research projects in the arena of entrepreneurial adaptation of scientific discoveries. Our innovative curriculum will prepare our students well to engage after graduation in creative and productive pursuits at the crossroads of science and industry."
