WGIL Interview: Giannoulias Will Run for Senate
It's not official yet, but Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias said, for all intents and purposes, it is.

"It looks like I'm going to run for the U.S. Senate, something that I'm extremely excited about."

Alexi Giannounias told WGIL's Will Stevenson this week in a one-on-one interview he's still in the exploratory stages, but believes he will make a formal announcement soon about running for the senate seat currently occupied by Roland Burris. Burris recently said he's not seeking a full term after being appointed there by ousted Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Giannoulias tells WGIL his exploring of a Senate run has been successful, and believes he's the right man for the job. "During these...times of enormous challenges, it's important to have people in office who care about this state, and who will bring innovative perspective to the U. S. Senate," Giannoulias said.

Giannoulias says Burris' announcement, and that by Attorney General Lisa Madigan to seek another term there instead of running for the Senate seat had nothing to do with his decision, saying who the other candidates are has never played into his decision.

There are several Republicans interested in the seat, including state G.O.P. chair Andy McKenna, and suburban Chicago Congressman Mark Kirk.

State Senator Dan Rutherford is so far the only candidate to announce a run for Giannoulias' seat as Treasurer.
