Illinois Corn Development On Par With Last Year
The corn crop in western Illinois has some catching up to do to reach the development achieved across the state at this time of the growing season.

The weekly report from the USDA says last week's average temperature in the region was 72.7 degrees, nearly four degrees below normal but slightly warmer than the statewide average. The .54 of an inch of rain that fell in the area was about a quarter-inch below normal.

Corn across the state is 11 percent silked, just one percentage point behind last year at this time. The progress is slower in western Illinois at just six percent. USDA crop statistician Brad Schwab says what he's seen looks good. "The corn crop that's out there now is healthy," Schwab said. "It's a bright green color, and it's making good progress. So, we're just that we'll continue to see good growing conditions throughout the remainder of the summer. Hopefully, (farmers) will have rainfall when they need it."

Soybeans statewide are 11 percent blooming compared to 22 percent last year. The number is 18 percent in western Illinois. Both the corn and soybean crops are rated 60 percent good or excellent.

Topsoil moisture is still abundant in the state. The USDA rates it 97 percent adequate or surplus - including a 99 percent in this area.
