Knoxville School District Tentative Budget Approved; Superintendent Says Finances Are Good
The superintendent of the Knoxville School District says even with a state budget that, until Wednesday, was still in quite a bit of flux, the district's financial picture is solid.

The District-202 Board adopted a tentative budget for the coming school year Wednesday night. The nearly $8 million budget, Larry Carlton says, is balanced for now, though $600,000 of that budget is coming out of over $3.5 million the district has in reserve.

Carlton told board members the budget will likely change before final adoption in September, partly because how much money school district will get from the state in the just-approved budget has changed.

"(The original proposal from the state) was for $140 additional (per student) in the foundation level," Carlton said. "As of (Wednesday), it dropped down to $31 per student. That's about $32,000 (less to the district)."

There are some spending increases in most categories, albeit modest, and the budget does reflect bonds being issued for the construction of the addition to Mabel Woolsey Elementary School and associated debt payments.

The budget will be available at the district office and on the district's website.

The District-202 board Wednesday night held a moment of silence honoring the life of Specialist Christopher Talbert, who died last week in Afghanistan. Talbert went to Knoxville High School for two years.
