Red Carpet Series Still Not 'Cancelled'
The president of Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre is continuing to dispute media reports that the "Red Carpet Series" of performances is cancelled.

Kate Francis told the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board Wednesday that's evidenced by the fact that she is looking at performances in the series for the spring of next year.

The C-C-A a month ago voted not to cancel the series, but to put it on hiatus for the fall due to not enough revenue coming in.

Francis says her efforts to book more Red Carpet shows, however, are still in the preliminary stages.

"I have been beginning to look at potential shows that I will bring to the board for consideration at the August meeting and at that time, we'll also need to look at a revised budget," Francis said. "We need to be looking at the 2010 budget a little earlier than we normally would."

Francis told the board that income from theatre rentals is up, but the bad news is that revenues from local hotel/motel tax proceeds is down. She says she is looking at starting an annual financial appeal, usually around the end of the year, a little earlier this time.

The Civic Center Authority Board also okayed the holding of what they're calling an "annual meeting" with businesses and other theatre donors August 20th starting around four p-m, that Francis says will be used to express some of the theatre's needs and challenges.
