Knoxville, Census Bureau Stress Importance of Being Counted
Community officials gathered in Knoxville to discuss the importance of the next United States Census due next year.

A Census official, as well as Knoxville Mayor Terry Pool, Knoxville School District Superintendent Larry Carlton and others met Wednesday night at the Old Courthouse in Knoxville and developed a partial plan to get the word out about the upcoming census and think of ways to promote benefits of participating in the count.

Census Bureau representative Sandy Bevridge told the group that the count has three definitive reasons why people should participate. She says it's easy, safe and important. Bevridge says the government is using technology to get the word out about the ease of completing the census.

"And you can actually print out the form or just take a peek at it and see, but it's essentially got name, address, phone number, (and) date of birth, so it's pretty basic information."

The Census does not solicit certain types of information many people are uncomfortable divulging. "There's no income information, there's no social security numbers, so that should make it a little bit easier to convince people to participate," Bevridge said.

Bevridge says it's important that residents of Knoxville and all other communities are counted since populations play a role in allocating over 300-billion dollars in federal funds every year for the next ten years.

She says businesses, schools, community-based organizations, and faith-based groups all have a responsibility to get the word out about being counted.
