Knox County Board of Health Moves Forward with Federal Clinic Proposal
The Knox County Board of Health is moving forward with the process needed that could make its community health clinic a separate entity and be funded with federal grant dollars.

The board during a special meeting Wednesday voted to hire Evanston, Illinois-based consulting firm Susan Greene and Associates to help the board go forward with the application process for what's called a Section 330 Grant, that could result in the Knox County Health Department's clinic becoming a Federally-Qualified Health Clinic and be eligible for as much as $665,000 in grants a year.

Greene spoke to the Board of Health via telephone and says it's been a long time since the government last had an open window for more FQHC's, so the time may be now.

"It used to be it was every December and May, then they cut out the May cycle. We haven't seen a new access point application process since December of 2007, so we skipped a whole year. We're told it was gonna come out in June or July."

Greene says since a date for Requests for Proposals hasn't been announced by the feds yet, and since filling out the application is a long and tedious process, the Board of Health should start now gathering data and other materials needed.

The board agreed to do that, though officials say there will still be a lot of work to do before a Federally-Qualified Health Clinic is established.
