Lawmaker Lends Support to Abingdon Demolition Grant Request
The city of Abingdon is still waiting for a response to its application for state grant money to tear down several buildings, demolition that has the full backing of State Representative Don Moffitt.

Abingdon, through the Western Illinois Regional Council, is hoping to secure a $200,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The grant would cover most, if not all of the cost to demolish a half-dozen buildings in the 100 block of South Main Street in the downtown area.

City Engineer Kevan Cooper told the city council Monday night that Moffitt has sent the state a letter in support of the plan. Cooper says Moffitt's letter stresses the need for the buildings to come down.

"The city aquired several properties that had suffered neglect and stood in serious disrepair and potential hazards. Since the buildings are dangerous and not able to be rehabilitated, the decision was made to tear them down and redevelop the lots in hopes of later attracting commercial growth."

The city has purchased all of the properties. Aldermen last month approved a $145,000 bid from Brown Excavating of Alpha to tear down the buildings. Cooper says the bid is contingent on the city receiving the grant money.
