Ameren Announces Layoffs
The economy's playing a roll in layoffs at one of the Ameren companies.

Ameren Energy Resources, the merchant generation and marketing company for Ameren Corporation, is laying off 42 people and cutting another 13 open positions. Company spokeswoman Susan Gallagher says it's due to the economy, low electricity prices on the open market, and the cost of environmental compliance.

Most of the workers will be laid off as of September, but some will stay until March. The employees are mostly located in Collinsville, the Bartonville/Peoria area and Effingham.

Gallagher says the positions are connected to coal-fired plant construction projects, which are being cut or scaled back because there isn’t enough money for them.
