Boaters Urged to Be Careful This Weekend
SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- Independence Day is a celebration, not an invitation.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources wants boaters to remember to wear life jackets and not to drink while at the wheel this holiday weekend.

In case anyone forgets the law of the waters, Illinois Conservation Police say they'll be out in full force.

Since October, 20 people have died in boating accidents in the state. The department is reminding boaters that safety on the water is important, even in the midst of fun.

Key tips: Take a safety course. Don't operate out of your comfort zone. Let someone know your plans. And, by golly, don't drink and drive.
