New Location For Library Will Be Studied
Even through the Galesburg Public Library Board has already examined a number of properties in a search for a new facility, a new location for a library is now being considered.

Galesburg Public Library Board President Martin Reichel says the group has studied a number of properties which include the armory and the Sears building which were deemed to small, while the OT Johnson site would need the board to purchase surrounding properties which may cost more money, and the Econofoods site along Main street which the board's architect said was a feasible solution.

Reichel tells WGIL the board is looking into a property that the city is looking to demolish as a possible new library.

"One site that looks very appealing to us is just directly east of Hope Cemetery along Main Street. There's a motel that appears to be going to be demolished in the near future. There are a number of other buildings that are not of high value and certainly would improve the looks of the community if a library were placed on that block."

Reichel says the board started the process back in 2003, not because they were looking for a new library, but because they thought it was important to determine what future needs of the library would be.

He says the board has had a sense of urgency in the past few years because of people using the library now more than ever.

Reichel says space is a main concern with the new facility since right now there's no such thing as a quiet little corner at the library.
