Illinois Poverty Rates Among Children On The Rise
Being a kid is not much easier these days, particularly if your family doesn't have much money.

The latest Kids Count Data Book shows a larger percentage of Illinois children live in poverty or in families where the parents do not have secure employment. From 2000 to 2007, the percentages increased from 13 to 15 and from 29 to 31, respectively. Also, 31 percent of Illinois children live in single-parent families.

The report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation is released through Voices for Illinois Children, whose spokeswoman, Melissa Meighen, says the statistics show declines in Illinois for infant mortality and for high-school dropouts.
