Library's Tentative Budget is in Good Shape
The Galesburg Public Library's preliminary budget is right in the park versus the budget of last year. That's according to Library Director Pam Van Kirk who spoke when the Galesburg Library Board's Finance Committee met Thursday afternoon at the Galesburg Public Library to discuss a proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

Van Kirk indicates that in the rough draft, which will be taken to city officials for more consideration and adjustments, expenditures in 2010 are projected to be at about $1.5 million, which is an over $66,000 increase over the 2009 budget.

Van Kirk tells WGIL certain aspects within the library have seen an increase in business. "I know (patrons are) using the (audio-visual) services a lot more, so (patrons) don't have to rent DVD's," Van Kirk said. "Even check-out and fiction -- we're seeing circulation higher; or the fact that (patrons) can put a reserve on a book from their home (via the internet) -- that has really jump-started the whole circulation. It's just a sign of the times."

Van Kirk also said despite the gain in expenses, they also propose seeing an increase in revenue of close to $50,000 over the 2009 budget. Most of the increase in revenue is due to more money from property taxes and more money from replacement taxes.

She says Thursday night's meeting was just for committee members to determine their needs but could face possible changes by city officials.
