Congressman Not Completely Pleased With Health Care Reform Efforts
A local congressman says he's "disappointed" his colleagues in the House are leaving for the August recess without acting on health care reform.

17th District Democrat Phil Hare says, however, he is glad that work is being done to mark up and essentially combine three separate health care reform bills in hopes that there will be a vote when the House returns to session in September.

Hare told reporters Friday during a conference call he believes Congress should have worked a lot faster on health care. "You take the 37 day break that we have -- and in each Congressional district you take those numbers, and moved them out...that would mean approximately every day, for the next 37 days...almost 1,200 people are going to lose their insurance and 34 people are going to die," Hare said.

The Galesburg native says he thinks that makes it a moral obligation for Congress to act sooner rather than later once the recess ends.

Hare says a good bill will have to reduce health care costs including the cost of health insurance.

He wants a public health care option in a good bill, a bill that eliminates pre-existing condition provisions, and health insurance portability instead of the current COBRA option.
