Rain Bad for Fireworks, Good for Corn Crop
Rain that started late Friday night and lasted through most of the day Saturday across the area might have put a temporary hold on most every fireworks show in the area, but the president of the Knox County Corn Growers Association says they were just what the doctor ordered.

Jarrod Brown farms south of Galva, and says while the rains earlier in the season caused lots of late planting headaches and plenty of spots most farmers avoided in their fields, the rain yesterday was almost a godsend.

Brown told WGIL Saturday it's a little too soon to tell what yields will be this year, but with rains like Saturday, things might be not so bad.

"If we get through pollination with some cool weather and a few rains (like we got Saturday), I think we're setting ourselves up for a very good crop," Brown said. "Last year surprised a lot of guys, and if we get close to that, it will be a very good crop out there."

Brown says the heat and high humidity levels of the last couple weeks with not much in the way of rain also helped the crops, even though, he says, corn height is still a couple feet behind normal.

Brown says even though late-planting due to we fields happened last year and crops came out okay, planting occurred even later this year, so there's really no telling what could happen.
