Fourth of July Almost a Washout in Galesburg Area
Mother nature clearly doesn't want to take a holiday off.

Most local Fourth of July celebrations were either cancelled Saturday or delayed until Sunday, after a nearly day-long rain washed a lot of celebrations out.

Galesburg's Big Bang Boom fireworks display at Lake Storey was moved from Saturday to Sunday for the first time anyone can remember due to the rain.

WGIL produces the display, and General Manager Roger Lundeen says rain at 7am Saturday kept the fireworks shooters from starting to set up the display when they normally would, and he says the decision to delay the display was made at 10am.

It will go off around dusk Sunday night synchronized to a music soundtrack broadcast on WGIL.

Other fireworks displays around the area were delayed to Sunday night as well, including ones planned for Knoxville, Lake Bracken, and others. The fireworks display for Abingdon, however, was already scheduled to occur Sunday night.

The National Weather Service says a little more than one inch of rain fell in Galesburg Saturday -- this, despite heavy rains being forecast at times.

Sunday's forecast calls for a much nicer, drier, sunnier day, with temperatures climbing back up into the 80's.
