July Designated Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Illinois
It's hard to blow the whistle on your children or grandchildren, even when they are abusing you. That's the gist of "Elder Abuse Awareness Month," as July has been declared in Illinois.

The crime is largely unreported - thus the awareness campaign's title, "Break the Silence."

The state's Department on Aging says abuse can be physical, mental, and financial. It also includes neglect. The department is publicizing a phone number people can call in the event of abuse: 1-866-800-1409.

The department says more than 11,000 reports of elder abuse were made during fiscal year 2009, which reflects an almost 20 percent increase in reporting since the campaign was initiated.

More information is available online at www.state.il.us/aging.
