FIRST ON WGIL: Battery Complaint in Abingdon Leads to Stunning Discovery
UPDATED 3:11 p-m 7/6/9 A report of a domestic disturbance at a residence in Abingdon late last week led police to a gruesome scene.

Police Chief Fred Andrews says officers were called Friday night to 606 West Monmouth Street, where he says 28-year old Rebecca Geier had been struck in the mouth by her husband. Andrews says police went inside to look for the man when they discovered eight dead animals. They were mostly cats and dogs, some of which had decomposed to skeletal remains. Andrews says the house also had feces throughout, was infested with fleas and had a horrible stench. He says he doesn't know what specifically killed the animals.

Eight other animals, found alive, were taken away by animal control. Two children, Andrews believes to be ages 10 and 8, were also living in the home and have been placed by DCFS with other family members. Andrews says Geier is facing several charges of aggravated animal cruelty, two counts of aggravated battery to a child because of the living conditions in the residence and single counts of child neglect and child endangerment. She has since been released from jail on bond.

Andrews says the city has contacted the Knox County Health Department to determine what to do about the house. He says the only prior complaints at the residence were garbage piling up outside.

Police continue to search for the man involved in the altercation. Andrews says he will be charged with aggravated battery once he's found.

Abingdon police say several dead animals were discovered in this home at 606 West Monmouth Street. The city attorney and the Knox County Health Department are now involved in the case.
