Quinn: Budget Cuts Will Be Made
Gov. Pat Quinn Tuesday will announce furloughs of state workers, and possibly layoffs, to close the state's budget gap.

The governor is looking at 12 furlough days, which is something he can unilaterally apply to himself and to the non-union staff that work directly for the governor's office.

He is also going to insist that lawmakers take unpaid furlough days to save the state some money. "If the rest of state government is taking 12 furlough days, including my office, I think all the legislators and all the legislative staff should participate in the sacrifice," Quinn said following a meeting Monday in Chicago with 39 state lawmakers from the Chicago suburbs.

Lawmakers would have to agree to go along.

When it comes to the rank-and-file state workforce, workers can be laid off, but furloughs in lieu of layoffs would have to be negotiated with their unions.
