UPDATE: Accident Kills Two on Railroad Tracks
UPDATED 10:28am 7/9/10 Two teenagers are dead after the were struck by a freight train Thursday morning just north of Abingdon.

The family of 16-year old Kyle Myers says their son along with 16-year old Mason Beheimer were killed. The Knox County Sheriffs Department confirmed the names Friday morning.

Sheriffs Deputies say the two were spotted laying between the railroad tracks at a crossing two and a half miles north of Abingdon and one mile east of Illinois Highway 41 around 8:20 am Thursday, just before the train struck them.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesperson Amy McBeth says the train was en route to Galesburg headed eastbound when the accident occurred at a crossing. McBeth says the train had five locomotives and 86 cars, and was carrying general merchandise from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Deputies say one of the two was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other died on the way to the hospital.

The line the train was on was closed for several hours while the accident was investigated, but it's since reopened.

Neighbors near the crossing tell us they've seen this type of accident happen all too often.

The Abingdon School District says pastors and counselors will be on hand for those who need them from 1-3pm Friday at Abingdon Middle/High School.

Autopsies are scheduled for Friday, and the investigation continues.
