Jerry Tharp Memorial Ride Saturday Morning -- WITH A LOCATION CHANGE
An annual benefit that starts Saturday morning stretching through three local counties will not only honor several local men in uniform who have died since the war on terror began, but it will also help soldiers with increasing medical bills.

The 3rd annual Jerry Tharp Fallen Heroes Ride starts Saturday at 10 am at the Central Park in Aledo. The Navy Petty Officer 1st Class' widow Gayle says the motorcycle and car caravan will stop at the cemeteries each of the fallen heroes is buried at, where a prayer will be said before moving on.

Gayle Tharp tells WGIL participants are asked to make a donation that will be used to help soldiers receiving medical care.

"I was a little distraught knowing that, when some of our veterans come home with some of their financial struggles that they've had to encounter, sometimes it takes awhile for their finances through the military to get in order," Tharp said. "These families, a lot of times, they're having to travel back and forth to Walter Reed (Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.) to be with the soldiers. It's just a lot of financial hardship on the families."

The caravan, Tharp says, will travel through Mercer, Knox, and Warren Counties before ending at a location that recently changed -- Smitty's in Keithsburg, instead of Joey T's.

Registration will take place before the ride, starting at 8 am.
