State On Lookout for Handicapped Parking Abusers at Chicagoland Speedway
Anyone illegally parking at in accessible spaces at the NASCAR races in Joliet this weekend is sure to get a ticket, and it would come with at least a $250 fine. Bill Bogdan, disability liaison for the Illinois Secretary of State's Office, says SOS officers are holding a compliance check at the Chicagoland Speedway, but are finding fewer violators.

Bogdan says when these checkpoints at the Chicagoland Speedway seven years ago, officers wrote 98 tickets. Last year the number was down to 10, and so far this year, it's three. He's finding similar results at the checks they hold in other parts of the state.

Vehicles not displaying either a disability or disabled veteran plate, or a placard for parking in spaces reserved for people with disabilities will receive a mandatory minimum fine of $250, with a maximum of $350. If a motorist is using a placard or plate but doesn't have the person with a disability present, the mandatory fine is $500.
