Some Arrests on State Waterways During 4th Weekend
A lot of boaters were surprised last weekend to be ticketed for operating a boat under the influence. Illinois Department of Natural Resources conservation police ticketed 32 people for OUI, six for driving under the influence, and 13 for drug offenses.

Chris McCloud, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, says the OUI tickets are unexpected, because so many people don't realize that boating drunk carries the same offense as driving a car or truck drunk. Overall, he calls the holiday weekend "busy and relatively safe."

Conservation police investigated nine boating accidents during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, with one, on Lake Lou Yaeger, near Litchfield, resulting in a death. Police say 15-year old Haley Hazelwonder of Jerseyville died Saturday after the accident involving the propeller of a boat that her father was operating

Police also issued 564 arrest citations for violations of boat, park, fish and game, vehicle code, and other offenses, and issued an additional 858 written warnings. During the June 25-27 weekend, CPOs conducted boat safety inspections, and inspected more than 450 boats, made 11 arrests for operating under the influence, and issued 59 arrest citations and 166 written warnings.
