Chicago's New Handgun Ban Begins Monday
Chicago's new gun regulation ordinance takes effect Monday, days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that individuals have a right to a gun to protect themselves in their homes. The ruling made Chicago’s 28-year old outright ban on handguns unenforceable. Anticipating the law would be struck down, Chicago officials quickly approved a new ordinance to regulate gun ownership.

The new ordinance forbids owners from carrying a gun on his or her person. It also forbids owners from stepping outside the home to a deck, garage or porch or into a back yard with a gun. Gun owners must undergo firearms training. And gun shops are outlawed within city limits.

Gun advocates have already filed suit against the new law. One suit involves four Chicago residents who want to carry their guns outside the home and the Illinois Association of Firearms Retailers whose members want to sell guns and operate gun ranges in the city.
