Crop Conditions Continue to Improve
Illinois farms aren't as wet as they were earlier in the growing season.

Farms reporting surplus moisture are down to 19 percent, from over 50 percent in the spring, as rain has tapered to a normal level and the heat and sunlight have caused some evaporation. But the standing water isn't all gone, says USDA crop statistician Brad Schwab. "In the middle of fields there's some spots where it was drowned out and they're not gonna harvest anything, so that's just the reality of the situation this year and hopefully it won’t be top extensive statewide," he said.

In terms of crop progress and conditions, according to the weekly USDA crop progress report:

* 72 percent of the corn is in the silked stage, up from 46 percent last week and 10 percent last year at this time. Sixty-five percent of the corn is rated good or excellent.
* Soybeans are now blooming at 43 percent, up from 20 percent a week prior, and compared to 10 percent a year ago. They're rated 62 percent good or excellent.
* Wheat is 95 percent harvested, allowing farmers to double-crop their wheat fields with soybeans.
