Mayor Endorses Treasurer Candidate
Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza is employed by the state's Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and admits...

"In the post that I serve in, the Mayor of the City of Galesburg, it's a non-partisan post," Garza said.

But that didn't stop Garza from saying Tuesday he supports the bid of fellow state employee and Chicago-area Democrat Robin Kelly in her bid to become Illinois Treasurer, replacing Alexi Giannoulias, who is running for Senate.

Garza tells WGIL he's not playing politics at all.

"For me, it's really seeking out who's going to bring the greatest value in terms of services to this community. That's what we value," Garza said. "With Robin, there's been that demonstration, not only of the [timeliness] of that response, but also the quality of that response. That is key."

Garza cited the ability the treasurer's office has had with his state office to work together, and believes Kelly will continue that on.

State Senator Dan Rutherford of Pontiac is running against Kelly.

"I know the office better than he does," Kelly said. "I have the experience. I can hit the ground running before day one. I want to do more with less. And it sounds like he does not."

Kelly admitted, however, "I'm not quite sure what his platform is."
