State Shows Off "CSI: Springfield"
The people at the real-life CSI in Springfield showed off their training and technology Wednesday. The Springfield Forensic Science Laboratory is one of eight the Illinois State Police operate. The Springfield center, housed at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, handles 33 counties.

Capt. Terry Ely, crime scene services commander, says the investigators, who in earlier times would have only a flashlight, carry a $10,000 piece of equipment called an "alternate light source," helping find hairs, fibers, and semen -- all critical in DNA technology. Asked about the money involved, Ely says, "How do you put a price on a loved one's family member that was murdered?"

While the work being done is similar to what's on television, state police say they cannot solve a case in an hour.
