Quinn Wants Simon to Focus on Schools
The Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor has been given a new responsibility.

The lieutenant governor has no official duties, other than to wake up alive every morning, but Gov. Pat Quinn has designated lieutenant governor nominee Sheila Simon as his "point person" on education, should the two be elected in November.

Simon says her experience as a teacher makes her suitable for the task: She's a legal writing instructor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and her husband is a political science professor at John A. Logan Community College in Carterville.

Simon says she doesn't want to step on the State Board of Education, Board of Higher Education or Community College Board, but the public needs an elected official to whom they can turn. She says teachers and administrators are well-represented in Springfield; she wants to marshal public engagement.
