IL Surgery Clinics Cited Over Infection Control
CHICAGO (AP) -- State inspection reports show that many same-day surgery centers in Illinois have been cited for serious infection-control problems.

The Associated Press obtained reports for 22 centers that were cited by state regulators for infection-control failures during the past year. That's nearly 76 percent of centers inspected.

The lapses included medical staff picking up items that had fallen to the floor and putting them back on surgery trays or not washing their hands after handling contaminated items.

Some clinics cleaned and reused devices meant for one person. Doctors were lax about tying their masks before entering surgery. And surgical nurses wore earrings and necklaces -- a danger because jewelry can carry germs into the operating room.
