Combating Health Problems Through Walking in Warren County
The Warren County Health Department wants county residents to get fit.

The department is hosting a program for the second year in a row to encourage people to walk everyday.

Public Health Educator Becky Spires tells WGIL cardiovascular problems are widespread in Warren County.

"Warren County has a high rate of cardiovascular issues," Spires said. "We're just trying to think of ways we can combat that. Last year, we came up with a program -- it's actually modeled after a program by the State of Illinois Department of Public Health called 'Women Out Walking.' We just modified it, because we didn't want to exclude the men. So, it's called 'Warren County Out Walking.'"

The 12-week program begins with an orientation session this Thursday.

Participants must pay $10, but receive a pedometer, a walking journal, a T-shirt and a water bottle.

So far 22 people are pre-registered. To learn more about the program or sign up, contact the Warren County Health Department at 734-1314.
