Health Department Urges Beating the Heat
With high humidity and temperatures, people need to take extra precautions to avoid heat exhaustion.

Knox County Health Department Director of Community Health Improvement Michele Fishburn tells WGIL people should use common sense when the thermometer is ready to bust.

"Stay in the air conditioning," Fishburn said. "If you don't have air conditioning in the home, and the temperatures are high, you should go somewhere that does -- particularly, if you're at risk for heat stroke. Go to your mall, go to your local shelter, somewhere, where you can go indoors and stay cool.

Fishburn also reminds everyone to drink plenty of water and avoid sugary beverages to prevent dehydration.

When it's hot for humans, it's also hot for pets. Fishburn says pets need to be allowed indoors when the temperatures go up.

A heat advisory was in effect Wednesday, with heat index readings of up to 106 degrees. Thursday isn't as bad, and no advisories have been issued, but humidity levels are still expected to make it feel uncomfortable outside.
