Giannoulias: Senate Tacked Important Issue in Wall St. Reform
The Democratic candidate for U.S. senator says legislation passed Thursday by the Senate tackles one of the most important issues in these trying times.

State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias says Wall Street reform, which passed in the Senate with a 60–39 vote, is badly needed to help ensure the collapse of the financial sector is less likely to happen again.

The reforms are the stiffest set of restrictions on banks and Wall Street since the Great Depression. The bill now awaits President Obama's signature. The bill allows the government new powers to break up companies that threaten the economy. It also sets up a new agency to protect consumers in their financial dealings.

Giannoulias was quick to point out to reporters that his opponent in the Senate race, U.S. Rep. Mark S. Kirk (R-Highland Park), voted against the measure when it was taken up by the House of Representatives.
