Illinois Creates Holocaust Commission
A new commission will assist Holocaust and genocide-focused educational institutions and organizations with public awareness efforts, under a new law.

The law creates the Illinois Holocaust and Genocide Commission that will work towards ensuring tolerance among future generations.

The bill was sponsored in the Senate by State Sen. Ira Silverstein (D-Chicago). "We say never forget," Silverstein said. "Unfortunately some people do forget. The key, in my vision, is [that] education maybe will wake somebody up and that is the purpose of this bill."

Gov. Pat Quinn signed the bill into law at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie. He must now appoint 15 members to the commission. The law takes effect Jan 1, 2011.
