Concerns Continue Over Quinn's Pay Raises
Republicans are taking all opportunities to criticize Gov. Pat Quinn for giving members of his staff raises. You might call David Vaught the "poster child" for this -- he received a 20 percent raise, to $144,000, for his promotion to state budget director.

State Rep. Bill Mitchell (R-Forsyth), joining Republican candidates in a series of Downstate news conferences, says he is going to introduce a bill to restrict pay raises for people who are promoted within the governor's staff. As drafted now, Mitchell's bill says the raise would be either 3 percent of half of the Employment Cost Index, whichever is less.

"You should have the sense God gave you not to do this," Mitchell said in describing Quinn's actions. "This governor does not have the common sense to say no."

Mitchell says he wants the legislature to debate the bill during the Veto Session in November, though he admitted the Democrat leadership is unlikely to let that happen.
