Unemployment Dips, But So Do Available Jobs
Unemployment is down in Illinois.

The unemployment rate for June was 10.4 percent, down from 10.8 percent in May, the third consecutive month-to-month decline, the Illinois Department of Employment Security announced Thursday. The national unemployment rate is 9.5 percent.

The number of unemployed Illinoisans stands at 693,900, down 26,900 from May.

The number of jobs for June was actually 200 less than in May, though, standing at 5,617,800.

There was a decline of 9,200 government jobs, mostly temporary census jobs that expired, which was nearly offset by a gain of 9,000 jobs in the private sector. Two of the hardest-hit sectors in the recession showed gains: Construction gained 3,400 jobs, and manufacturing gained 1,000 jobs.

For the first six months of the year, Illinois has added 59,900 jobs. However, over the last 12 months, the state has lost 28,500 jobs.
