Charitable Giving Declines in U.S.
Giving went down last year across the country, but it wasn't the worst drop. According to the Giving USA Foundation, charitable giving in the U.S. dropped last year by 3.6%, to $303.75 billion.

Foundation chairwoman Edith Falk, who's based in Glenview , says she expected the drop to be more dramatic, and says Americans continue to be generous, despite the recession.

Falk notes that 2009 was the third consecutive year that giving topped the $300 billion mark. She says she was most surprised to see the increased level of giving by corporations.

Corporate giving rose to about $14.1 billion, which is an increase of 5.5%. Falk says the increase is largely due to an increase in in-kind donations, particularly of information technology equipment and medicine.

Falk says much of the donations come in the last quarter of the year, but says another factor affected last year: the stabilization of several economic indicators. She says more people felt confident that they would keep their jobs, and went back to donating at earlier levels.

Since this report began in 1956, the worst decline was found in 1974, when the total dropped 5.5%.
