Giannoulias Hits Back On Criticism Over Taxes
CHICAGO (AP) -- Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias is hitting back on criticism he didn't pay any income taxes last year.

Giannoulias said Thursday he has paid incomes taxes in previous years but didn't have any tax liability last year because of losses related to his family's now-failed Chicago bank.

Giannoulias' Republican opponent Mark Kirk has called that "distasteful." Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn has said people on the public payroll should pay taxes.

Giannoulias reaffirmed his plans to donate the $30,000 in tax refunds he is due to charity.

He says he would give the money to a charity "short changed" or owed money by the state.

The state is cutting money and leaving bills unpaid as it copes with a $13 billion budget deficit.
