Knox County to Participate in Put Illinois to Work Program
At its meeting Wednesday, Knox County Board members voted to enter into a contract to put Illinoisans to work.

A memorandum of agreement will be signed with Heartland Alliance out of Chicago.
The organization is working with the state for its Put Illinois to Work Program.

Board Chairman Greg Bacon tells WGIL the program will help fill in some areas of the county this summer.

"So that's why we did it as a county-wide project. Some offices that don't have but one or two people can get a person in there. If I have enough work for a person to shred something from the treasurer's office for 20 days, if we do it as a county, as a whole, I can move that person to the landfill to mow for two months and I can move them around where ever there's work."

The program is paid for with federal stimulus dollars and is geared toward 18 to 21-year-olds who reach a certain amount of the federal poverty level.

It was announced earlier this week Heartland Alliance had stopped accepting applications because there is not enough jobs.

Bacon says signing the contract will open up some jobs for people to receive.

He says anyone interested in the work must contact Heartland Alliance to apply.

The board also approved a renovation contract of a wing at the county nursing home which will include a bariatric unit and a physical theropy center.
