Abingdon Police Chief Wants Help Dealing With Meth Problems in City
It might be said that Abingdon's top cop is at his wit's end trying to figure out how to combat what he sees as a growing problem in the city.

Chief Fred Andrews says his department has been tested to the max recently, with recent arrests related to methamphetamine and suspected meth labs in town the last several months -- the last of which happened almost a month ago on East Jackson Street that resulted in five-people being charged.

Andrews says he needs more of the public's help in getting the dangerously illegal drug out of town.

"There's more meth going around right now, and they could be in anybody's neighborhood," Andrews said. "We're really asking people, if you seen an odor or anything, we're looking for that. Officer Josh Kramer just patrolling -- we were lucky -- that's how we finally got into this house, and arrested these five individuals."

Andrews says, however, even trying to get illegal drugs off the streets presents its own problems.

For one, he says some officers willingly come into work to help during times like that, and offer not to get paid, saving the city money in a tight budget.

But some aldermen say that concerns them, budget or not, all officers who work deserve to get paid.
