Crops Good, But Rain Will Be Needed
Crop progress is good, but conditions are dry. Numbers on the state's crops show significant progress over last week, although crops will soon need rain.

Mark Schleusener, USDA crop statistician, says topsoil is the driest it has been all year. He says soil moisture is rated at 4 percent very short, 20 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. He says the driest areas are in the East and Southeast reporting districts.

Last week's progress numbers indicate that 89 percent of the state's corn crop has silked, well above the 65 percent five-year average and the dismal 24 percent last year. In soybeans, 64 percent of the crop has bloomed, compare to 22 percent last year and a 56 percent five-year average.

Wheat is nearly completely harvested at 99 percent, compared to the 95 percent five-year average. About 39 percent of the state’s oat crop has been harvested, compared to the 24 percent five-year average.
