Hare Supports Affordable Flood Insurance
The government is attempting to keep flood insurance affordable for people who live in flood prone areas.

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to extend affordable flood insurance rates for another five years.

Congressman Phil Hare recently visited a few river towns in the area to talk about the reforms found in the bill.

He tells WGIL the Flood Insurance Reform Priorities Act protects people's pocketbooks.

"What we did in this bill, is re-authorize the Flood Insurance Program for five years," Hare said. "It gives people who live in flood-prone areas the assurance that they are going to be able to purchase flood insurance at an affordable rate, and knowing that financial damages they do incur, if they do, are going to be covered by the government."

Hare says the bill also delays for five years a mandate to purchase flood insurance for residents who live in an area recently designated as a flood plain or high flood risk area.

The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate.
