Roofers Must Now Be Licensed in Knoxville
The City of Knoxville now has an ordinance on the books that the mayor admits he didn't necessarily want.

Aldermen Monday night approved an ordinance requiring any roofers doing work in the City of Knoxville to register annually at City Hall.

Mayor Terry Pool tells WGIL such a requirement is something he's resisted for a long time.

"We've talked about having roofing licenses in the city in the past," Pool said. "I've been kind of reluctant to do that. But the state has come up and has requested all cities require a roofer to have a license. Our license is $10 a year, then the homeowner can call City Hall and make sure they have a license."

Pool stresses the license isn't just applicable to Knoxville business -- rather, any roofer who does any roofing work in the city, and the registration would be annual.

He says he hasn't wanted to put such an ordinance on the books before now because he thinks Knoxville Police have better things to do than bust unlicensed roofers.

But now, Pool says, they'll have to, and it should be easy for them to verify a license with City Hall.
