City of Galesburg Seeking Transportation Money
In the past the city of Galesburg has applied for federal grants and been unsuccessful, but all that could change.

City Manager Dane Bragg says the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is allowing another round of TIGER grants, or Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery.

The first time city officials applied for monies to be used for the proposed rail crossing quiet zones, but Bragg says the city will take a different avenue in the second round of applications.

"The concept that we're looking at is a multi-modal center that would allow for city bus, regional bus, including Burlington Trailways, car rental, as well as taxi service, all to utilize the same facility," Bragg said, "which would give us an indoor transfer point for bus patrons, which has been a priority of ours for many years."

Initial plans would be to locate the center in Colton Park.

Bragg says, however, the city is at slight disadvantage because the applications are due by August, and must include an environmental impact statement.

Bragg says the city would have to ask for an extension in order to have the environmental study complete.
