Pastor Barred from Peoria County Jail
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities at the Peoria County Jail say a Baptist clergyman who has long served as a minister for inmates there has been barred from the facility after allegedly making derogatory comments about jailers and encouraging inmates to sign petitions.

Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy confirmed Thursday that the Rev. A.J. Guyton is at least temporarily no longer allowed to visit the jail to conduct church services.

The 73-year-old Guyton, who is also a former chairman of the Peoria Housing Authority board, has been holding services for Peoria inmates for more than two and a half decades.

McCoy would not go into detail about comments Guyton allegedly made during services July 11, saying only that the pastor made some statements about guards and encouraged inmates to write petitions about conditions.
