District 205 Tentative Budget Presented
The budget is balanced, but it's on pretty shaky ground.

That's how Galesburg School District Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Guy Cahill would describe the tentative budget the board approved Wednesday night and will take final action on in September.

The $41 million spending plan has to have some increases -- including in salaries, retirement benefits, and health insurance.

But Cahill says as for what state aid the district may get, it's anyone's guess, since an estimated $6,100 per child in general state aid may not be that way in the end.

"What I'm not comfortable with is the Governor being given a new power," Cahill said. "A power to basically reduce that foundation level anytime in the fiscal year because there's no money left in the bank. That's an over-simplification, but that's what he's been given."

That's to say nothing of cuts in areas like title one and reading grants that have been slashed or removed altogether.

Cahill says further strains on the budget come from an estimated 2% decline in property values, and an estimated 13% drop in corporate tax receipts.
