"Relay for Life" Starts Friday Night at Knox College
The ongoing fight to treat and combat cancer is back in Knox County in just a few hours, and officials hope this will be their biggest year to date.

The annual Knox County Relay for Life starts Friday night at the Knox College track, running through eight o'clock tomorrow morning.

Relay chair Melinda Hale tells WGIL the annual event where over a thousand cancer survivors, volunteers, and friends gather and raise money for the American Cancer Society raised $120,000 last year, and they already have a good start toward this year's goal.

"Our goal this year is $144,000," Hale said. "We're already approaching the $100,000 mark. We're expecting a lot of teams to hand in their dollars at the last minute. We're having another 'bank night' just as we get there Friday evening. We're hoping that we have a really good turnout. Our teams have been fundraising like crazy."

Events that involve both walking and non-walking take place through the night into the next morning, starting with the 7pm opening ceremony and the celebration of survivors, followed by a Luminaria ceremony later. There's also live entertainment, theme-based laps, and more.
