West Nile Virus on the Rise in Illinois
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) -- Health officials say mosquitoes in Bloomington have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The McLean County Health Department says the presence of the virus in mosquitoes increases the risk that the insects will pass it to humans.

Health department Director Walt Howe says late summer is when West Nile virus is most active.

McLean County is the eighth county in Illinois to have mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile this summer.

West Nile is transmitted through being bitten by an infected mosquito or eating an infected bird.

There were five human cases of West Nile virus reported in Illinois last year, down from a high of 252 cases in 2005.

So far this year, there have been no human cases of West Nile virus reported in Illinois.
