Advocates Push for Juvenile Justice Reform
A group called the Juvenile Justice Initiative hopes the governor will sign a batch of measures that it supports.

With the overall goal of being smart rather than tough on crime when it comes to kids, Mary Reynolds of the the Juvenile Justice Initiative is pleased that lawmakers passed a measure to let an existing group study whether 17 year olds facing felonies can be tried as juveniles.

"Our hope is that this study can be done in a way that shows that the state obvviously could move this direction and include all 17 year olds to begin in juvenile court. They can always be transferred up, but this law allows them to be at least start in the juvenile court."

Lawmakers previously wanted a task force to look into it. The group Is lso supporting measures allowing counseling and/or community service in sexting cases and allowing confidential mental health services.
