Giannoulias Urges Campaign Finance Reform
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias is proposing campaign finance reforms that, even if they became law, would be unlikely to hold up in court.

Giannoulias, the state treasurer, is proposing a ban on contributions from corporate lobbyists and political action committees, even though the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United that corporations have a right to contribute.

"We need to correct the wrongs of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United," he said. "I can't say this more clearly: We need less corporate money and influence in our politics, not more."

Giannoulias also wants to ban government contractors or any company that got TARP money from making contributions, and to impose a lifetime ban on members of Congress becoming lobbyists before Congress.

He acknowledges that even if he should be elected, the likelihood of a first-term senator prevailing with harsh ethics requirements is remote.
